Coconut, coconut, coconut, a wonder living thing that yields food, dwelling and sweet water. When a friend delectably described coconut ice cream, curious George got the better of me.
A wonderful surprise that the recipe only called for four basic ingredients. And as the adage goes, try and try until you die (not really, until you succeed). The first attempt was the learning curve. Off to the store to buy four shells of coconuts. Had the store break them open and scrape the meat. At home, extracted the milk from the coconut flakes (an exercise of putting water on them and then squeezing off the liquid).
Side story: I have fond memories of coconut milk. My grandmother had long, black hair and the only thing that touched her hair was coconut milk. She would laboriously go through the process of extracting the coconut milk and when she bathed, she would pour the milk on her hair and let is stay until she is done with her bathing chores (which often included doing her laundry which she entrusted to no one but herself). Her long hair stayed long, shiny and healthy until her old age.
Back to the maiden attempt, the result with milk from fresh coconut did not turn out as expected. There must be a right mix of water and flakes to get the right consistency of a creamy milk. That will be for future experiments. To the rescue, canned coconut milk. While the ultimate goal is to use only the freshest ingredients, this one will do for now since this is an experimental attempt.
Life musings: Life is not always black and white. Not all first attempts lead to success. One learns from the lessons of earlier tries and make another go. Success may happen but it is the wonders of lessons learned that add spice to life.
